This film tells and sings of life and tragedy in a nomadic Kyrgyz village in the Tien-Shan mountains. Set in the 18th century, the film recounts a story of true love between Esen and Begimai, the daughter of Bazarbai, the tribal leader. The Song of the Tree reflects upon themes of love between parents and children, humankind’s relationship and harmony with nature, love for one’s motherland, and struggles for justice. In addition, it is saturated with national traditions and symbolism that remain relevant to this day in Kyrgyz society.
